Home Fire Safety Check Project
The Village Care Schemes network has been working in partnership with Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service on the Home Fire Safety Check Project. Karl Grant is Home Fire Safety Project Officer for Bedfordshire and Luton Fire & Rescue Service and aims to create partnerships with external agencies - such as village care schemes - to provide free training for professionals and volunteers in order to reduce the number of people killed or injured in fires.A Home Fire Safety Check is an evaluation of the occupiers risk from fire. This includes home fire safety advice and, depending on the risk category, the supply of a free smoke alarm.
A free training session was offered to the Village Care Scheme volunteers because they already provide a service to their communities, they know the customers who use their schemes, they sometimes go into peoples homes and, most importantly, they care for the communities in which they live.
Nine villages took up the Home Fire Safety Check training at the Community Safety Centre in Luton. The training included:
- Information about the Home Fire Safety Check Project
- Learning about the theory of fire safety
- Learning good fire safety practices
- Identifying fire hazards by using the Fire Services fantastic resource (a house set up with various fire hazards which you have to identify)
- How to complete a Home Fire Safety Check
- How to fit a smoke alarm
- A supply of free smoke alarms for use in your community
- Information leaflets on good fire safety practices
The service was initially offered to existing customers within the Village Care Schemes, and will be extended when all customers have been contacted.
