Have you thought about becoming a school governor?
Are you interested in the education and well-being of our young people? Are you enthusiastic and committed and would you like to get involved in helping shape the future of our children? If so, why not become a school governor? School governors play a vital part in the success of schools. Schools are fascinating places and being a governor can be very enjoyable and worthwhile. Governors are volunteers who work in partnership with school headteachers and the Local Authority to ensure that children receive the best education possible. Governors represent the largest volunteer group in the UK and are selected from a variety of backgrounds to reflect the many interest groups within our schools.
There is no such thing as a 'typical governor'. You do not need any formal qualifications, just an interest in your school, some energy and enthusiasm and some time to commit to the role.
Governors come from all sections of the community: parents, staff, businesses and local community representatives - in fact almost anyone. There is always a need for enthusiastic and committed people to serve as governors. Being a governor can be very rewarding.
Working in partnership with the head and other staff,
governors are involved in:
setting the school's aims and policies;
improving standards of teaching and achievement;
setting the school's budget plan and monitoring
expenditure;
interviewing and appointing teachers and support
staff;
acting as a link between the local community and the
school;
dealing with complaints about the school;
drawing up an action plan after an inspection, and monitoring the success of the plan.
Governors are supported by the Local Authority (LA) which provides a wide range of support services, information and materials. The LA works to ensure that the crucial role that governors play in the life of schools is recognised and understood.
Are you, or might you be, interested in becoming a governor?
