BRCC has been involved in play and recreation for many years, not least as the secretariat for the Bedfordshire Playing Fields Association (BPFA). In 2009 BRCC took over the BPFA, including responsibility for the management of the Jubilee Play Centre at Shuttleworth.

BRCC is currently delivering the following projects in connection with play:

Bedford Borough Playbuilder

In August 2009, BRCC was awarded the contract to manage the implementation of over £1 million of investment in play areas in Bedford Borough, through Playbuilder initiative funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Natural Play in Mid Beds

The Mid Beds Natural Play project kicked off in the autumn of 2008 at Baulk Wood, near Henlow. Nearly 100 children turned up to build dens, sculpt animals, climb logs, make pictures with stones and sticks, and take part in a scavenger hunt.

The 3-year project, jointly managed by BRCC with Mid Beds District Council and the Greensand Trust, aims to get children playing in ‘the great outdoors’ again. “The natural environment is a fantastic playground that is under-used by children these days,” says BRCC’s Cliff Andrews. “Natural Play combines physical exercise with creativity, imagination, social interaction, adventure and an element of self risk assessment.”
