The Warden Abbey vineyard is situated on a four acre site between Old Warden and Cardington, and was planted by the Whitbread family in 1986. Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity and Shuttleworth College have been negotiating a joint leasehold, with a view to developing the vineyard as a "not for profit" educational and community resource.

As well as offering a range of formal courses, BRCC also hopes to provide opportunities for the whole community to get involved. Set in a beautiful and historic location, there is tremendous scope to explore the site's heritage, whilst improving wildlife habitats. All at a time when English wines are really coming into their own!

Volunteering

Already groups of volunteers have taken part in practical sessions at the vineyard. It's not all physical work though. There will also be lots of opportunities to be involved in fund-raising, business and marketing - including promoting the project and wines at fairs and markets and leading tours of the vineyard. You can learn new skills, or help by bringing your existing knowledge and skills to the project.

If you are interested in getting involved, please make contact with:
Jane Markham at moot@hotmail.co.uk.

2010 Harvest

In a fantastic turn-out, 44 volunteers took part in this year’s grape-picking on 8th October, along with students from Shuttleworth College. Everyone worked really hard, and the whole crop of over 5 tonnes was picked in the one day. There was a great atmosphere, and we were very lucky with the weather – the sun even came out in the afternoon!

“I really enjoyed picking today - I met some lovely people and had a giggle
so thank you! I would love to help again when you next need unskilled
labour- if you will have me!!!”
Amanda, Ampthill.

As this is our first year, we are making a limited amount of wine, with the remaining grapes being sold to help finance the wine-making. We are delighted that Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking is making the wine for us. Denbies is one of the largest vineyards in the UK, and we look forward to developing our relationship with them in the future.
